Things to do in Scarborough
Scarborough is the perfect suburb to have a truly lazy beach holiday. You can swim in the ocean, surf the waves, lie in the sun or read in the shade. The atmosphere is chilled out but still lively with many tourists and locals packing out the shorelines on clear days. When you get sick of the beach, wander round the shops and cafes and enjoy the street side dining culture. The night life is fun and vibrant with many bars and night clubs scattered through the area.
Perth is only a short bus or car ride away if want more variety of shops and restaurants.
History of Scarborough
The original inhabitants of this area were the Whadjuk Noongar people who have been wandering and dwelling in South West Australia for over 40, 000 years. Willem de Vlamingh was the first European to discover the West Australian coast in 1697, but he considered the area uninhabitable. In the early 1800s Perth became Western Australia?s first full scale settlement. The suburb of Scarborough was named after an eponymous English seaside resort.
Landmark in Scarborough
The suburb?s most treasured landmark is Scarborough Beach, reputedly one of the best white sand surf beaches in the world. The Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club mans the shores and the beach is home to many famous sporting competitions including the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.
Shopping in Scarborough
There are several local shopping precincts in Scarborough. These include Luna Shopping Centre and the CBD area (which is on the corner of Scarborough beach Road and the West Coast Highway), Rendezvous Observation City and Scarborough Beach Road. In these districts you will find a wide variety of retailers and services including supermarkets, clothes and jewellery boutiques, sports stores and gift shops. The Scarborough Fair Markets are open on Saturdays and Sundays opposite the Rendezvous Observation City Hotel.
