Things to do in South Perth
There is a wealth of things to do in South Perth, whether it is enjoying the riverfront parks, visiting the zoo or popping over to the city for some shopping.
Some of Perth's best parks are located in South Perth. Sir James Mitchell Park along the Swan River has walking paths and terrific picnic spots all with stunning views over the ever growing Perth skyline.
The Perth Zoo is in South Perth and is one of the cities premiere attractions. Set in a beautiful, garden oasis, the zoo has over 1300 animals and 200 different species of animals. The zoo's gardens are also worth seeing and contain many important plants and flowers, many over a hundred years old. The gardens also house wildflower displays and a rainforest.

History of South Perth
South Perth was officially proclaimed a separate suburb in 1831. One of Western Australia's first mills was established in South Perth in 1833 and after a ferry service crossing the Swan River was established, the suburb became a desirable place to reside, resulting in many grand homes being constructed. A popular place to live today, the suburb is a mixture of apartment buildings, mansions by the river and some older houses.
Landmark in South Perth
The Swan River which divides Perth and South Perth is the most famous landmark in the suburb. A wide and deep body of water, the river helped Perth expand into the bustling city it is today by allowing the easy transportation of goods. Named by the Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh in 1697, the Swan River is the iconic image of Perth.
The old mill built in 1833 still stands on the southern shore of the Narrows section of the Swan River. The suburb also houses the Perth Zoo which draws large crowds all year round.

The main shopping centre in South Perth is the Meadowvale Shopping Centre. All the big city shopping of department stores, luxury good stores and speciality retail shops are all a short trip away in the city of Perth.
