Things to do in Avoca Beach

Head for the great surf, go sea kayaking, explore walking trails along the headlands or take a long walk along Avoca's vast beach. You may also like to head for family friendly Avoca Lake, explore nearby bushland on horseback, throw in a line or eat fish & chips on the beach.

History of Avoca Beach

The first European settler arrived in1830 and called his land grant Avoca and built a house overlooking Avoca Lake which subsequently burnt down 20 years later. In the late 1800s the area was leased for its timber but these days tourism is the town's main industry offering a range of accommodation.

Landmark in Avoca Beach

Visit the art house Avoca Beach Theatre for some old world entertainment. Avoca Lake is just behind the beach and is a safe place to swim or hire a boat. The Skillion is the headland separating Avoca Beach and Terrigal Beach and is the place for dolphin and whale watching. Head to Captain Cook Lookout for a view of three prominent headlands which Cook named First Point, Second Point and Third Point.

Avoca Beach and nearby Terrigal have their share of boutique shopping and nearby is the extensive Erina Fair Shopping Centre.

Avoca Beach is 95km (a one hours drive) from Sydney along the F3 freeway. Trains travel between Sydney Central Station and the Central Coast every half hour and ferries run daily between Sydneys Darling Harbour and Ettalong. Or you can lash out and charter a seaplane from Rose Bay in Sydney.
