Bateau Bay is a coastal paradise and is the ideal spot for swimming, surfing and walking along the coast. Angler's flock to the beaches and rock platforms of the coast and to the calm waters of Tuggerah Lake and Budgewoi Lake, which are also a haven for swimmers, waterskiers and boaters.
Bateau Bay is surrounded by the Wyrrabalong National Park which contains stunning coastal scenery, lookouts and perfect spots for picnics and day trips.
The Entrance adjoins Bateau Bay to the north and contains a large shopping precinct, pretty beaches, parklands and a busy foreshore area.
History of Bateau Bay
The area around Bateau Bay was originally inhabited by the Darkinjung Aboriginal people. The suburb was first settled by European and Chinese fishermen in the early 1800s who established villages at Picnic Point and Toowoon Bay. The completion of the Sydney to Newcastle railway line in the 1880s led to an increase in the population of the Central Coast including Bateau Bay.

Bateau Bay is one of a string of beautiful bays lining the Central Coast that also includes Toowoon Bay, Blue Bay and Little Bay. This stretch of coast contains rugged headlands, sandy beaches and idyllic swimming spots. The lookout at Crackneck Point in the Wyrrabalong National Park is a great whale watching area and the Coastal Walking Track that links the Wyrrabalong Lookout with the Blue Lagoon offers great views and fantastic opportunities to spot whales as they migrate north.

Stockland Bay Village is the main shopping centre in Bateau Bay. It houses three supermarkets and over one hundred speciality stores. Cresthaven Shopping Centre is a smaller shopping centre servicing Bateau Bay and smaller clusters of shops are dotted throughout the suburb and surrounding areas.

Bateau Bay is easily accessible from both Sydney and Newcastle. From Sydney, take the F3 Freeway and The Entrance Road. From Newcastle, Bateau Bay is reached by the scenic coast road.
Trains from Newcastle and Sydney travel along the Central Coast stopping at Gosford, Lisarow and Wyong. Local bus services connect Bateau Bay with The Entrance and Gosford.
