History of Echuca
The area around Echuca was originally inhabited by the Yorta-Yorta Aboriginal people. The first European to sight the region was explorer Charles Sturt who in 1838 passed through the area on his way to Sydney from Adelaide. In the 1840s, James Maiden established a cattle property on the northern side of the Murray River and founded the town of Moama. Around the same time, Henry Hopwood, an ex-convict, took over the operation of punt that crossed the Murray River upstream from Moama. Hopwood was largely responsible for the founding of the settlement that surrounded the river crossing which was first known as Hopwood's Crossing and which was later renamed Echuca. The town thrived in the late 1800s as a bustling inland port city but following improved rail and road links to the Murray region, the town's importance as a port declined significantly. The town and surrounding area remains an important agricultural district. The area is also becoming increasingly popular as a holiday and relaxation destination.
