History of Gosford
rior to European settlement Gosford was inhabited by the Guringai and Darkinjung Aboriginal peoples. European exploration of the area occurred soon after the settlement of Sydney, as timber cutters and grazers settled along the banks of the Hawkesbury River. The town was officially proclaimed in 1839 and grew further following the arrival of the railway from Sydney in 1887. Today Gosford is a commuter suburb of Sydney and a service centre for the surrounding local communities.
