History of Jesmond
Originally known as Dark Creek, Jesmond began as an industrial suburb of steam saw mills and local orchards. By the 1880s the population had reached 600 and Jesmond developed into a village. Today the suburb is a multicultural commercial centre which provides much needed accommodation for students attending the University of Newcastle.
