History of Neutral Bay
The deep inlet between Kirribilli and Kurraba Points was called Neutral Bay when Governor Arthur Phillip ordered that all foreign ships entering the harbour must anchoring a neutral place across the harbour from the settlement in Camp Cove. Thomas Mitchell, the Surveyor General for NSW, created a Town Plan for the North Shore of Sydney and in 1828 whaling allotments were granted in the Neutral Bay area. By 1830 the whaling industry was well established; and in 1831 Millard a boat builder, launched the Colonys first locally built craft, a 40 ton vessel made from native timbers.
Military Road was cut through bushland in 1871-72 to haul cannon and supplies to new fortifications being built at Bradleys Head, Georges Head and Middle Head. However, Middle Head Road is believed to have been the original track to Mosman through Neutral Bay. Anderson Park once served as an emergency airfield for the pioneer Australian aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith.
Landmark in Neutral Bay
May Gibbs Nutcote Nutcote is the harbour side home of May Gibbs, one of Australias best loved childrens authors and illustrators, was designed by the renowned Sydney architect, BJ Waterhouse in 1925. This cottage is now preserved as a historic house museum.
Citizen Roses - Neutral Bay resident, Mark McGuire has been responsible for the development of an impressive rose garden on the Councils verge in Billong Street Neutral Bay. There are 400 rose bushes in more than 80 varieties.
