Things to do in Palm Beach
One Sydney's most northerly suburbs, Palm Beach is most famous as the film site of TV soap Home and Away. But because it sits at the end of a peninsula, visitors can also experience the gentle waters of Pittwater on one side and the ocean on the other. This makes it a great daytrip from Sydney, with its headland walks, large rock pool, lighthouse and exclusive shopping and dining. Beautiful beach houses and magnificent holiday homes are available if you fancy a longer stay.
History of Palm Beach
Governor Arthur Phillip sailed into Pittwater in 1788 in search of agricultural land and by 1808, early settlers were growing vegetables for Sydneysiders. Palm Beach got its name from the cabbage tree palms that grew there.
Fishing developed and smugglers were attracted to the area so a customs office was built. It wasn't until the completion of the road from Newport in the 1920s that the area became easily accessible from Sydney
Landmark in Palm Beach
Barrenjoey lighthouse is an operational lighthouse accessed via at steep track at the northern end of the beach at Pittwater. The gentle water of Pittwater is on one side of Palm Beach and Main Beach is on the other.
Palm Beach's Cabbage Tree rock pool at the southern end is great for kids and swimming laps. Palm Beach jetty on Pittwater is where ferries leave for the hour-long trip to Ettalong and Wagstaff.
The surf life saving club is in the middle of the beach at the ready for swimmers in distress.

Sports & Fitness in Palm Beach
Palm Beach's main beach is ideal for walking, jogging and surfing. Paid surf lifesavers and volunteers patrol it and the Surf Club is prominent in Sydney. Palm Beach's Cabbage Tree rock pool is great for swimming laps. There are also lots of good bushwalking spots at Governor Phillip Park and Ku-ring Gai National Park. Pittwater is the starting point for the Pittwater to Coff's Harbour Yacht race in January.

Buses are the main form of public transport in the area though there is also a ferry that travels to and from Ettalong on the Central Coast.
