Things to do in St Ives
St Ives is not so much a doing place as a very attractive place to live. It is a leafy garden suburb with large houses, many with pools, on large blocks of land. At its centre is the Village Green and shopping centre, where people socialise over coffee, gelati or a meal.
On the outskirts is the 100 hectare Ku-Ring-gai wildflower Garden a large area of bushland, interlaced with marked bushwalks.
The Ku-Ring-Gai National Park borders onto St Ives, extends to West Head across Pittwater from Palm Beach and includes such popular picnic and boating spots as Bobbin Head and Akuna Bay.
History of St Ives
Within days of arrival in 1788, Capt. Phillip sent a party in a rowboat to explore Middle Harbour. They followed the creek as far as a boat could go which was below what is now Hunter Street, St Ives!
A pleasant bushwalk leads to a plaque commemorating this. Early settlement was based on timber extraction, using what became Fiddens Wharf on the Lane Cove River.
It was only after the Harbour Bridge was built that The North Shore became really accessible. Orchards were planted extensively. The massive real estate development of St Ives really began only in the 1960s.
