History of Taylor Square
Originally inhabited by the Eora Aboriginal people, Taylor Square and surrounding suburbs were some of the first places settled following the arrival of Europeans in 1788. Darlinghurst was considered an upmarket location and many grand residences were constructed on its hilly streets to take advantage of views over Sydney Harbour and Sydney's CBD. By the mid-1800s, Darlinghurst Gaol and Darlinghurst Courthouse were built and the area gradually evolved to encompass higher density living. Today, Taylor Square is known as a cosmopolitan and vibrant area of inner Sydney and is popular with the gay community, young professionals and students.
Landmark in Taylor Square
Taylor Square is the intersection where Oxford Street meets Flinders and Bourke streets and also forms the border of the suburbs of Surry Hills and Darlinghurst. Darlinghurst Courthouse overlooks Taylor Square and is an imposing sandstone building constructed in the 1840s. Taylor Square is also known as a dining and nightlife precinct that comes alive on weekends. The area is also well known as being the venue for the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
