History of Tumut
Prior to white settlement Tumut marked the boundary of three Aboriginal tribes. To the north lived the Ngunawal, to the south the Walgalu and to the west the Wiradjuri. During the summer months the tribes met to feast on the plentiful Bogong moths.
But it was in 1824 that the prologue to Tumuts modern history was written when explorers Hume & Hovell on their epic inland journey to Port Phillip discovered the lush green valley.
During the 1820s settlers pushed down the Murrumbidgee and by 1829 the first pioneers were on the Tumut River.
By 1887 Tumut a name derived from an Aboriginal work meaning Resting Place by the River was a municipality and by 1928 it had become the headquarters of the thriving Tumut Shire which embraced Adelong, Batlow and Talbingo. Today the explorers have gone but the haunting beauty of the valley remains.
People from the original tribes still live across the Tumut region and perform rituals and ceremonies to maintain their relationship with the land.
