History of Ultimo
Pyrmont was originally a marginal, working-class area built on the very fringes of the Sydney settlement. The demographic was very poor and became synonymous with a long history of slum landlords and the slaughteryards that operated from the 1830s to 1859. As a consequence, there are many historical and colourful stories about the area and its residents.
