Things to do in Vincentia

This South Coast village on the shores of Jervis Bay area is the place for swimming in clear waters, lazing on white sandy beaches and spotting dolphins, whales and underwater attractions. There are also lots of scenic walks on its headland and national parks. Beachfront holiday houses are a nice way to stay.

History of Vincentia

Huskisson was one of the first settlements to be earmarked in the Jervis Bay area in 1840 when convicts were sent there built a track on which wool was to be shipped to Sydney but it wasn't actually settled until the 1860s. Vincentia was once part of Huskisson until 1952 when it was renamed Vincentia after the battle of St Vincent by a local developer. Vincentia is situated on Jervis Bay, a territory of the Commonwealth of Australia, which was named in 1791 after British Admiral John Jervis.

Landmark in Vincentia

Booderee National Park on the southern side of the bay is a well-known walking and camping spot. The nearby Botanic Gardens feature 80 hectares of rocky outcrops and wetlands. The naval college HMAS Creswell has heritage listed colonial architecture and a collection of historical artifacts relating to the college and the Jervis Bay area though access is restricted. Green Patch Beach is the area's most famous beach and has a beautiful camping ground. Wreck Bay has a series of sandy bays with sheltered beaches and is also home to an 87-hectare Aboriginal settlement. The main town on the Bay is Huskisson.

Shopping in Vincentia

The local shops at Burton Street are close to holiday cottages and cabins and include a number of specialty shops and a supermarket. Huskisson also has a large shopping centre and a great selection of shops on its promenade. Further away lies bustling Nowra.

Restaurants & Cafes in Vincentia

Vincentia, like the entire Jervis Bay region, offers plenty of dining variety with its great multicultural cuisine and seafood. Huskisson also offers a variety of dining options including the charming Husky Pub that overlooks the bay and there are more restaurants, cafes and clubs at nearby Jervis Bay and Nowra.

Sports & Fitness in Vincentia

With its long beaches, rivers, reefs, caves and wrecks, the entire area is great for family friendly swimming, snorkeling and fishing. Kayaking is also popular as is bushwalking in the nearby national park. Bowls, golf and tennis are available in Huskisson

A regular bus service links towns in the Jervis Bay region including Huskisson and Vincentia.

Transportation in Vincentia

Vincentia is 185km (2.5 hours drive) south of Sydney and 3 hours from Canberra. Nearby Nowra is serviced by buses and trains from Sydney and the Illawarra rail line terminates at Bomaderry from Sydney and Wollongong. Trains are met by local bus companies. Daily coach services run through Nowra to Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.

The nearest hospitals are Nowra Community Hospital and Shoalhaven Hospital in Nowra.Vincentia has a primary school and there are secondary schools in the area. Jervis Bay is home to the Australian Naval College, HMAS Creswell.
