History of Waverton
Originally inhabited by Aboriginal people for thousands of years, Waverton was first settled by Europeans in the 1820s when Edward Wollstonecraft and Alexander Berry took up a large land grant encompassing much of present day Wollstonecraft, Crows Nest and Waverton. Joseph Purser established an estate after buying land from the pair and in 1845 built Waverton House. The extension of the railway line, and later the construction of the Harbour Bridge, saw Waverton become an extremely popular residential suburb, enjoying close proximity to the harbour, North Sydney and Sydney's CBD.
