Things to do in Cairns

This tropical North Queensland city is surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef, Trinity Bay and the rainforests of The Atherton Tablelands. Its attractions are therefore diverse and popular activities include a tour of the reef in a glass bottomed boat, a trip on the Skyrail gondola or Scenic Railway up the mountain to the rainforest village of Kuranda or a visit to one of the many nearby islands.

History of Cairns

Captain Cook is believed to be the first European to have visited the site where Cairns is now located. He named Trinity Inlet on Trinity Sunday, 1770 but due to the inhospitability of the area, a settlement was not established for another century until gold was discovered there. The future of Cairns was further buoyed when it became the starting point for a railway line transporting raw materials and then sugar cane farming, still a big industry today, took hold. Cairns fishing and pearling industries also grew which further secured its prosperity.

Landmark in Cairns

The Great Barrier Reef is the highlight of the area along with the cool mountains of the Atherton Tablelands. There is also the beautiful Daintree Rainforest and the rainforest village Kuranda and the Scenic Rail or the Skyrail that can get you there. Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park is the place to see indigenous performances. For wildlife there is Hartley's Creek Crocodile Farm, the Australian Tropical Zoo - Wild World and Flecker Botanical Gardens and Centenary Lakes.

Shopping in Cairns

Cairns has a number of shopping areas including Smithfield with over 60 specialty stores, Edge Hill Edge and Yorkeys Knob. There are also markets featuring arts and crafts at Kuranda, the nearby rainforest villiage.

Cairns has a vibrant nightlife and has dining to suit all tastes and budgets. Nearby Kuranda also has delicious cafes and restaurants.

Sports & Fitness in Cairns

Activities include kayaking, white water rafting, ballooning, 4wd tours, sports fishing, bungee jumping and parasailing. Swimming is an all year round activity at some of its beaches, thanks to its stinger nets. Cairns also has golf courses, a public swimming pool, tennis courts and a number of sports clubs.
