Things to do in Whitsundays

The Whitsunday region is one of the worlds most desirable holiday destinations. There are 74 idyllic islands which are located in the area and all are surrounded by the World Heritage listed area, The Great Barrier Reef. The largest island in the group of islands is Whitsunday Island. There are many things to see and do in the Whitsundays ranging from the many water activities such as snorkelling, sailing and scuba diving to just lazing on the many pristine beaches located in the region. History of Whitsundays

The Whitsunday Islands were originally formed by volcanic action. However, after the last glacial period (30 to 50 000 years ago) the sea level rose, leaving the higher coastal peaks as islands. In 1770, the Cumberland Islands were discovered by Lieutenant James Cook. On Whitsunday Lt. Cook sailed through and named the passage between the northern islands, the Whitsunday Passage. Later, once surveyed, the Cumberland Islands were divided into smaller groups - the Whitsunday Group, the Lindeman Group, the Anchor Islands and the Sir James Smith Group. The Australian Aborigines of the Whitsunday Islands were called the Ngaro and are among the earliest recorded groups in Australia. The Whitsunday islands became more accessible in 1962 when the road from Airlie Beach to Shute Harbour and the jetty were finally completed.
