Things to do in Middleton
Middleton is an aquatic paradise perfect for swimming, surfing and scuba diving. Walking and cycling along the beachfront to Goolwa or Port Elliot is a popular pastime as is fishing or simply sunbaking on Basham or Middleton Beaches.
Middleton is a great spot for whale watching. Southern Right Whales often enter the bay off Basham Beach and a number of other great viewing spots, such as the cliffs above Horseshoe Bay, sit along the coast.
Middleton has a winery where you can sample some of the local drop at the cellar door. Other wine producing areas dot the Fleurieu Peninsula including the famous McLaren Vale region. Many of the restaurants of the Fleurieu Peninsula make fantastic use of local produce and seafood.
Nearby Lake Alexandrina is fed by the mighty Murray River and is a great spot for sailing and fishing. Goolwa Beach is yet another terrific surfing and fishing spot.
History of Middleton
Navigator and Cartographer Matthew Flinders and Nicholas Baudin, a French explorer, were the first people to map this stretch of the South Australian coastline. They named the Fleurieu Peninsula for the Navy Minister of France, Charles Pierre Claret, the Comte de Fleurieu.
Landmark in Middleton
Middleton Beach is a long, expansive stretch of sand running from Middleton to Goolwa. Well known among surfers for its terrific breaks, the beach is the focal point of the town. Basham Beach, the next beach along from Middleton Beach is a calmer beach perfect for swimming and ideal for children. Basham Beach is also a great whale watching spot, as Southern Right Whales can often be spotted entering the calm waters in winter.

There are general stores, cafes and bakeries in Middleton. More serious provisions can be obtained in Victor Harbor at the Victor Central Shopping Centre and many of the surrounding towns have regular, well attended markets.
