History of Port Elliot
Port Elliot was first settled in the 1880's as a port to transfer goods from the Murray River to ocean going ships. In 1854 a railway line, one of Australia's first, was constructed between Port Elliot and the Murray at Goolwa. The town thrived until the port was moved to Victor Harbor and Port Elliot became a sleepy tourist hamlet, focused on tourism and as a popular spot for retirees from Adelaide.
The town is named after Charles Elliot, the Governor of Bermuda who was a friend of the South Australian Governor, Sir Henry Young who served as Governor between 1848 and 1854.
