Things to do in Cape Otway
The stretch of coastline between Apollo Bay and Princetown is well worth exploring, as are the Otway Ranges ? a magnificent mix of woodlands, fern gullies, rainforests and heaths. The Cape Otway Cliff Walk is a great way to explore the area on foot. The Cape Otway Lighthouse Station is a must see historical site. There are guided tours available and there are several easy walking tracks that start at the Station. Take a drive along the Great Ocean Road to experience the full extent of Victoria?s rugged coastline. Main Beach in Apollo Bay is perfect for swimming. For something really special, book a helicopter ride over the 12 apostles just off the coast of the Great Ocean Road. Cape Otway is also a great place for viewing native wildlife.
History of Cape Otway
Matthew Flinders was the first European to come across the coastline in 1802. Late Lieutenant James Grant named the area after his friend Captain Albany Otway.
The history of Cape Otway has been filled with many tragic shipwrecks. In fact the western coast of Victoria has notoriously experienced more wrecks than any other area of Australia. The treacherous waters prompted the construction of what was to become Australia?s oldest operational lighthouse in 1848. This light station played a role in Australia?s WWII coastal defence.
The traditional owners of the land are the Gadubanud people.
Landmark in Cape Otway
The Cape Otway Lighthouse was the oldest operational lighthouse with unbroken service until it was decommissioned in 1994. Completed in 1848, it is situated on the northern end of the Eye of the Needle. Often deemed Australia?s most significant light station, the tower was built after a series of unfortunate shipwrecks off the shore of Cape Otway. It was the second lighthouse built on mainland Australia.
Guided tours of the site are available and there is a small charge for admission.

The closest reasonably stocked shopping precinct is in Apollo Bay. Here you will find two medium sized supermarket and a range of other services including a bank, bakery and surf shop. Colac and Geelong offer more extensive facilities, and Lorne also has a few more food stores, cafes and gift shops.
