Things to do in Carlton

A visit to Carlton must include a stroll down Lygon Street, the home of Melbourne's Italian population. History of Carlton

Carlton is a bustling inner suburb of Melbourne that was founded following the Victorian gold rush. Known as Little Italy, Carlton has primarily been associated with Italian immigrants who have settled in the suburb and established businesses and homes. Despite its Italian heritage, Carlton today attracts a large number of immigrants who add to the melting pot nature of the suburb. Carlton also houses a large student population as the suburb is home to the University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Carlton's most famous landmark is Lygon Street which draws visitors year round who dine in the many Italian restaurants and cafes along the strip. Carlton also contains a number of heritage buildings including the Melbourne Trades Hall and the Carlton Club on Drummond Street. Carlton Gardens is a world heritage listed site that contains the Melbourne Museum, the Royal Exhibition Building, an Imax Theatre and a children's playground. The surrounding gardens are a magnificent combination of green lawns and Australian and European trees and shrubs.

Bustling Lygon Street is the centre of Carlton's shopping precinct. Carlton is also ideally located close to the wonderful shopping of Melbourne's CBD. The city is home to major fashion labels many of which can be found along the Collins Street precinct. Nearby Little Collins Street is also the home of less well known, more cutting edge fashion labels. Bourke Street Mall is department store heaven and the other major shopping centres of GPO Melbourne, Australia on Collins, Collins Place and Melbourne Central all draw large crowds.
