History of Carlton
Carlton is a bustling inner suburb of Melbourne that was founded following the Victorian gold rush. Known as Little Italy, Carlton has primarily been associated with Italian immigrants who have settled in the suburb and established businesses and homes.
Despite its Italian heritage, Carlton today attracts a large number of immigrants who add to the melting pot nature of the suburb. Carlton also houses a large student population as the suburb is home to the University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Carlton's most famous landmark is Lygon Street which draws visitors year round who dine in the many Italian restaurants and cafes along the strip.
Carlton also contains a number of heritage buildings including the Melbourne Trades Hall and the Carlton Club on Drummond Street. Carlton Gardens is a world heritage listed site that contains the Melbourne Museum, the Royal Exhibition Building, an Imax Theatre and a children's playground.
