History of East Melbourne
East Melbourne and the surrounding suburbs were originally inhabited by the Kulin Aboriginal people. Following the establishment of central Melbourne, East Melbourne was one of the first suburbs settled in the new city. Given its proximity to the CBD and pleasant natural environment, East Melbourne soon became a haven of the wealthy, who constructed stately residences and grand commercial buildings. Today, East Melbourne remains an attractive and desirable inner suburb of Melbourne.
Landmark in East Melbourne
East Melbourne is known for its historic buildings, with the most famous being Victoria's Parliament House and the Treasury Building which were both constructed in the 1850s. Other notable buildings include the Commonwealth Government Offices, Victoria Brewery and the East Melbourne Synagogue. A number of stately mansions survive from the 1800s, with the most notable being Queen Bess Row, Eastbourne Terrace and Tasma Terrace. Sporting fans will instantly recognise the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Melbourne Park tennis complex, both of which are located in East Melbourne.
