Things to do in Great Ocean Road

The Twelve Apostles are the most recognized icons of the Great Ocean Road. There are numerous boardwalks and viewing platforms to ensure visitors get the most spectacular views. If you are a beach lover then the Great Ocean Road is for you. There are a number of fabulous beaches ranging from the tranquil bay beaches to surf beaches. Bells Beach is a world famous surfing beach which is about 30km from Geelong and Torquay is very popular with families due to its protected sandy front beach. Holiday home accommodation is available all along the Great Ocean Road. The region offers some of the most amazing national parks and low range mountains such as the Angahook-Lorne State Park, Discovery Bay Park and the Port Campbell National Park of which is famous for the Twelve Apostles and historic shipwrecks. Visit the Otway Ranges to walk the 600 metre long boardwalk which is suspended 25 metres in the rainforest canopy above the forest.

History of Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road is home to some of the most spectacular natural history in the world. The Twelve Apostles are just one of these natural wonders and these remarkable formations began more than 20 million years ago. Road construction work on the Great Ocean Road began on the 19th of September 1919 and the stretch of road was officially opened on the 26th of November 1932 by Lieutenant Governor, Sir William Irvine.

Landmark in Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road officially starts at Torquay and finishes at Allansford where it joins the Princes Highway near Warrnambool. The south-west coastline of Victoria between Moonlight Head and Port Fairy is home to a treacherous section of coast that has claimed more than 180 ships and earnt it the title of Shipwreck Coast. Bells Beach is a world famous stretch of surf beach which has hosted numerous international surf tournaments. The Otway Ranges are a natural a tall-timbered rainforest which cover an area of 88,000 hectares of massive tree ferns, waterfalls, lakes and a wide range of native animals.

Shopping in Great Ocean Road

The main towns along the road including Torquay, Lorne, Apollo Bay and Warrnambool contain the main shopping areas. Major supermarkets are located in Torquay and Warrnambool and provisions can be obtained along the way in Lorne, Apollo Bay and Port Campbell. A number of interesting speciality shops can be found along the drive and markets in the various towns are also popular.

Restaurants & Cafes in Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road has a wide range of restaurants and cafes dotted along the picturesque coast. You will be sure to find seafood on the menu here with some of the freshest seafood in Australia. Lorne is a town recognised for its Mediterranean feel. You will find a wide range of trendy beachside cafs and restaurants along the coastal towns.

Sports & Fitness in Great Ocean Road

Not surprisingly, water sports are the most popular sporting and fitness activities in the Great Ocean Road region. Surfing is extremely popular and thousands of surfers flock to Bells Beach for its annual surfing competition. Many breaks can be found along the road, the best being at Anglesea, Lorne and Apollo Bay. Hiking in the Great Otway National Park is popular and a number of other fantastic bushwalks run from the sea into the surrounding hinterland. The serious hikers can take the challenge of the Great Ocean Walk, a 91 kilometre trek from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles. The area is a paradise for anglers, with rock fishing a well practiced activity.

Transport in Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road region is easily accessible by car, train and bus. Melbourne international airport is the closest capital city access point to the Great Ocean Road and is located just 55 minutes by car from Geelong. The Great Ocean Road is a 2-hour drive from the heart of Melbourne. Melbournes Spencer Street station provides rail connections to Geelong and Warrnambool and bus connections provide further links with the coastal village of Port Fairy and Portland.
