The bay at Mount Martha is ideal for swimming or boating. However if you prefer to stay dry, take a relaxing stroll or drive along The Esplanade and explore the summit lookout atop Mount Martha. The shopping village is a great place to hunt for quirky antiques and local artworks as well a great selection of cafes and restaurants. The area around Mount Martha is perfect for bush walking with its rocky outcrops and stunning lookout points. The historic Briars Homestead is also worth a visit. Built in 1848, the property has its own nursery and restaurant and is open for public tours.
History of Mount Martha
In the 1840s, Mount Martha was primarily a farming town. During World War II, the United States Marine Corps stayed in Balcombe Creek following the Battle of Guadalcanal. Today Mount Martha is popular with locals and visitors - famous for attractions such as Glint Castle and Mount Martha House.
Landmark in Mount Martha
Mount Martha, with a peak stands of 160m above sea level, is the region's major landmarks is. The mountain and the suburb were named after Martha Lonsdale, the wife of a captain in the Royal Navy. The Briars Homestead built in 1848 for Alexander Balcombe and is now a National Trust Property that includes a wine centre and a wetlands sanctuary. The homestead also houses a collection of Napoleonic artefacts which represent Balcombe?s long friendship with the famous leader.
