History of Belmont

The area around Belmont was originally inhabited by the Awabakal Aboriginal tribe. European settlement of Belmont and the Lake Macquarie area began when Captain William Reid mistakenly entered the mouth of Lake Macquarie believing it was the mouth of the Hunter River, where he had been sent to collect coal. In 1863 Thomas Williamson settled in Belmont and built a guesthouse named Belmont which gives the suburb its name. Today, Belmont is a desirable waterside suburb of Newcastle home to a large retiree and tourist population.

Lake Macquarie is Australia's largest saltwater coastal lake. Situated to the west of greater Newcastle and open to the ocean at Swansea, the towns and villages surrounding the shoreline of the lake have long been popular retirement and holiday destinations.
