Fingal Bay is perfect for swimming, surfing and fishing. History of Fingal Bay

The Fingal Bay area was originally inhabited by the Worimi Aboriginal people. Fingal Bay was first sighted by Europeans when Captain James Cook sailed past in 1770. The land surrounding Fingal Bay and Port Stephens was considered unsuitable for agricultural and only a small number of villages were established in the area. Timber getting, fishing and boat building were early industries. The lack of heavy industry has allowed much of this stretch of coastline to remain preserved.

Landmark in Fingal Bay

Fingal Bay is a long sweeping arc of sand renowned for its surf breaks and fishing spots. At the northern end of the beach, a sand spit connects the mainland with Fingal Head. Accessible only by walking trail, Fingal Head is a preserved island containing untouched coastal scenery and spectacular ocean views. Tomaree National Park surrounds Fingal Bay, with the imposing Tomaree Headland the main geographic feature of the area. The picturesque stretch of coastline north of Fingal Bay features challenging bushwalks and gorgeous beaches to explore such as Zenith and Box beaches.

Shopping in Fingal Bay

Nelson Bay's central business district contains a good range of shops including newsagencies, pharmacies and supermarkets. Salamander Shopping Centre is the area's main mall and houses supermarkets and chain stores.

Restaurants & Cafes in Fingal Bay

The Fingal Bay area boasts an excellent range of eateries including restaurants, cafes and takeaway shops. Nelson Bay has the greatest number, with restaurants and cafes to be found along Stockton Street and opposite the marina. Shoal Bay, Salamander Bay and Soldiers Point also contain dining options.

Fingal Bay is accessible from Sydney via the F3 Freeway and Pacific Highway. Newcastle's Williamtown Airport is close to Fingal Bay and is served by all of the major carriers. Coach services also connect the area with Newcastle and Sydney.
