Things to do in Hunter Valley
The large wine producing area north of Sydney known as the Hunter Valley has over 100 wineries to visit and a variety of accommodation, some of it onsite at the wineries. It also has beaches, mountains, bush land reserves and historic towns to explore. Take a scenic cruise on the Hunter River, a ride on the Hunter Valley Steam Trains or go hot-air ballooning over vineyards. Nearby are the city lights of vibrant Newcastle, the waters of Lake Macquarie and the wilderness of Barrington Tops.
History of Hunter Valley
Originally inhabited by the indigenous Wonnaruha, the first European visitors arrived in the area in the early 1800s initially for timber and then coal mining. This has been the area's economic mainstay ever since along with primary produce and more recently power stations, wineries and tourism.
Landmark in Hunter Valley
The lower Hunter is the place to visit some famous names in wine including Lindemans, McGuigan, Rothbury Estate, Tyrells, Hungerford Hill and Wyndham Estate. The area is home to the magnificent Hunter River and the recently reconstructed Hunter Valley Gardens. Singleton is home of the southern hemisphere's largest sundial and the region's heritage can be revisited in historic Maitland and Morpeth.
Shopping in Hunter Valley
For shopping in the Hunter Valley, Cessnock's Vincent Street shopping strip is up there at the top of the list. There is also historic Maitland and Morpeth which are packed with specialty shops like arts & crafts and antiques. Maitland Fair Markets, the region's largest market, is held on the first Sunday every month.
Restaurants & Cafes in Hunter Valley
The Hunter Valley is famous for its gourmet offerings with much of the activity centered on the vineyards of the Polkolbin district, many of which include restaurants and holiday lodgings. Also in the region fine dining is found at historic Maitland and Morpeth and there is a great selection of cafes, restaurants and clubs in Cessnock and Singleton.
Sports & Fitness in Hunter Valley
The Hunter Valley has a number of sporting facilities such as the golf courses that populate its tourist retreats. Sporting venues in Cessnock, Maitland and Singleton include swimming pools, tennis and squash courts, lawn bowls, ten pin bowling, indoor cricket, gliding, parachuting and race courses.

The area is well serviced by local buses and trains and Cessnock has its own airstrip.
