Things to do in Iluka

Stroll along the 2.5km walking track and enjoy the unique sights and sounds of the Iluka Nature Reserve. If you are keen to witness more of Australias natural beauty, explore the nearby Bundjalung National Park. If you feel like getting out on the water, there are daily cruises along the Clarence River you can even take an unforgettable evening barbecue cruise. The nearby expanse of Broadwater (just west of Maclean) and Clarence Rivers many tributaries make this area a boaties paradise. There are also many beaches where you can swim or try surfing, including Iluka Bluff, Black Beach and Frazers Reef. If you like a good coffee, visit the Wombah Coffee Plantation on Iluka Road.

History of Iluka

Before European settlement, the region of Iluka was inhabited by the Yaygir or Bunjalung Aboriginal people. Iluka grew slowly from the 1860s, but it was mostly Yamba, on the other side of the river which was developed and commercialised. Iluka remained a small fishing port and is still enjoyed by tourists seeking a peaceful retreat.

The Iluka Nature Reserve is an ecological landmark. The region is home to the largest remnant of littoral rainforest in NSW where the trees are hydrated via filtration through coastal sand. The Reserve also sustains a diverse range of vegetation, bird and animal life, which makes it a must-see if you are travelling in the area.

Shopping in Iluka

Iluka has two local supermarkets and various basic food stores. There are local art and craft markets that take place on the Iluka Sports Ground on the first Sunday of every month. For a bigger selection of shops and services visit the nearby town of Grafton and the South Grafton Emporium.

Restaurants & Cafes in Iluka

There are several places to dine out in Iluka, and many more to choose from in the neighbouring suburb of Yamba. Three of Yambas restaurants are featured in the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide making it a new eating hot spot on the NSW north coast. Yamba and Iluka also have plenty chilled out cafes where you can spend an afternoon enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Sports & Fitness in Iluka

Iluka has its own 18 hole golf course - but watch out for the emus and wallabies that like to frequent the area. The local Bowls Club has adjacent tennis courts and playing fields. In the nearby town of Maclean there is an indoor sports centre. Swimming, surfing and bushwalking are also popular in the area and the natural environment makes the perfect venue.

Transport in Iluka

Ballina airport offers the most flights from capital cities and the Yamba airport shuttle will take you to Iluka. There are rail connections available that will take you to Grafton and from there there are Countrylink buses which will connect you to Iluka.

Iluka is 683km up the coast from Sydney and 282km down the coast from Brisbane. The nearest large towns are Ballina (90km/1.5 hours away) and Grafton (76km/1.5 hours away).
