History of Katoomba
Situated in the heart of the World Heritage listed Blue Mountains, Katoomba is named after the Aboriginal word Kedumba, meaning shiny falling waters. However it started out as a coalmine in the late 1800s and the famous Scenic Railway operates in the mountain's original cutting. Around the same time, the first hotel was established and attracted many visitors but more recently Katoomba has had to struggle to compete with nearby towns for the tourist dollar.

The rock formation known as the Three Sisters at Echo Point is Katoomba's best-known landmark. Another is the Scenic Railway, an old coalmining train that takes passengers downhill at 45 degrees. Next to the Scenic Railway are the Scenic Skyway and Sceniscender cable cars.
The Edge cinema in Katoomba has one of the largest screens in the southern hemisphere. The famous Jenolan Caves are found at Kanangra-Boyd National Park South West of Katoomba. For those planning to stay and explore, Katoomba has plenty of cabins, holiday houses, hostels and hotels.
