Things to do in Patonga

Patonga Beach is at the centre of the town's attraction. The southern most Central Coast beach, its calm waters are perfect for everyone, particularly for children, who can safely splash around in the water. The area around Patonga Creek is also worth exploring, with large sections of interesting estuarine mudflats that are brimming with marine life. Patonga is an angler's paradise, whether it's dropping a line in off the wharf or boating out into the expansive waters of the Hawkesbury River or Broken Bay. The other beaches around Patonga are also worth exploring, with nearby Pearl Beach one of the most popular.

History of Patonga

Settler John Hatfield was granted the land where the township of Patonga stands today in 1839 and the area was sub-divided twenty years later. The unusual name of Patonga is said to have derived from an Aboriginal word for oysters.

Landmark in Patonga

Patonga Beach is an easily accessible and safe beach for swimming and fishing. There is a boat ramp and a wharf and plenty of room for lazing around. Patonga Inlet lies at the southern end of the beach and is popular with families who have children in tow. Bordering the town is the beauty of the Brisbane Waters National Park. This expansive reserve borders the Hawkesbury River and contains some scenic sandstone landscapes and Aboriginal rock art. The park is an ideal spot for bushwalking and bird watching and offers terrific, sweeping lookouts, particularly from Staples Lookout and closer to town, from Warrah Lookout.

Shopping in Patonga

Limited supplies can be obtained in Patonga. Pearl Beach has an excellent general shop and cafe. Locals stock up in the major centre of Woy Woy which is well served with amenities. Head to Deepwater Plaza for supermarkets, banks and major chain stores.

Pearls on the Beach, right on the beach at Pearl Beach is a favourite that combines contemporary cuisine with a fantastic view.

Sports & Fitness in Patonga

Watersports are the favourite activities of visitors to Patonga, whether it be at Patonga Beach, which due to its calm waters, is perfect for every level of swimmer, or for kayakers, who have the Hawkesbury River and Broken Bay at their disposal. The Hawkesbury River is also a favourite haunt of water-skiers who flock to the area all year round. Bushwalking in the Brisbane Waters National Park is also a popular recreation. There are a great many walks including the Falls Walking Track and for those serious about bushwalking, the 2 day trek of the Patonga to Wondabyne Track.

Transport in Patonga

From the centre of Sydney, Patonga is an easy one hour and twenty minute drive along the Pacific Highway and F3 Freeway. Trains from Sydney and Newcastle stop in the nearby town of Woy Woy. Local buses service Pearl Beach, Umina, Woy Woy and other surrounding towns. A ferry service also travels across the Hawkesbury River from Brooklyn and across Broken Bay from Palm Beach.

Transportation in Patonga

Patonga is 90 kilometres from the centre of the Sydney and 6 kilometres from Pearl Beach. The major town of Woy Woy is 11 kilometres away and Patonga is an easy 23 kilometres from Gosford.
