At the centre of the Hunter Valley wine region, Pokolbin is a great place to take a wine tour, hit the golf course, take in the local scenery or relax by the fireplace in one of the many holiday houses available for rental.
History of Pokolbin
Pokolbin was originally to be the name of Nulkaba but the name was instead given to farmland to the west. Wine making began in the Hunter Valley in the 1830s and the Drayton family was the first to establish a vineyard at Pokolbin around the late 1850s. Tyrrells Estate was set up in 1859 and the wine industry grew between the late 1870s and the depression of the 1890s. Then in the 1960s that the wine industry boom as mining operations in the area closed and Australian tastes changed. Australian wine has since gained international appeal resulting in major growth in the region.
Landmark in Pokolbin
Some famous local wineries include Tyrrell's, Drayton Family, Lindemans and McWilliams. Shiraz and Semillion are the most commonly produced wines in the area. The Hunter Valley Wine School in Pokolbin offers a two-hour tutorial on wine from the vineyard to the tasking room. Local golf courses include Cypress Lakes and the new Greg Norman designed The Vintage. The Hunter Valley Gardens have 25 hectares of display gardens, as well as boutique shopping, dining and picnic areas. Pokolbin is home to both a cheese and a chocolate factory.

With its many wineries, Pokolbin is the place to buy wine though it also has some specialty shopping for visitors including galleries, nurseries and gift shops. In the town centre there are general stores and along McDonalds Road you can buy wines and visit galleries and more. For more shopping there is Cessnock's main shopping strip in Vincent Street and Cessnock Plaza for specialty shops and a supermarket.

If it is fine wine and food you are after, the Pokolbin district of the Lower Hunter is the place. In addition to tastings, many of the area's vineyards also offer great quality restaurants and a wide variety of accommodation. You can walk to many wineries and restaurants from the centre of town, close to accommodation. You will find many more wineries on Hermitage Road, Deaseys Road and Mistletoe Lane along with restaurants, galleries and accommodation. Pokolbin also hosts the annual Hunter Valley Harvest Festival, with music, art, wine tasting, and gourmet produce.
