Things to do in Port Macquarie

Swim in Port Macquarie's many pristine beaches, take a camel ride at Lighthouse Beach or get to know the local koala population. Take a river cruise or a scenic flight, spot some dolphins and whales, or explore its coastal rainforests. Get a sense of the history of its convict past by stopping in at some of its historic sites and museums. Port Macquarie's attractions are handy to local accommodation of many types.

History of Port Macquarie

Port Macquarie, named after the Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie, was first visited in 1820 by John Oxley and was initially founded as a penal settlement, relocated from Newcastle. Ten years later a decision was taken to phase out the penal settlement and open it to free settlers who established cattle, timber, vineyards and dairy industries and later a port. Port Macquarie was still a quiet fishing town in the 1960s until roads improved and now it is a vibrant, commercialised resort.

Port Macquarie is also the home of the famous Koala Hospital at Macquarie Nature Reserve run by the Koala Preservation Society. Port Macquarie's Historical Museum is inside a convict-built store and contains numerous historical documents and artifacts Port Macquarie's beaches include Town Beach, Oxley, Rocky, Flynn's, Shelly, Miners and Lighthouse beaches. The Sea Acres Rainforest Centre at Shelley Beach has 72 hectares of coastal rainforest. Timbertown is a recreated saw miller's village of the late 1800s complete with heritage steam train and bullock teams. In the nearby hinterland is Ellenborough Falls, the largest single drop waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere. Tacking Point Lighthouse, Australia's third oldest built in 1879, offers great views and walking trails to Miners Beach. You can take a camel ride at Lighthouse Beach

Port Macquarie is a major centre in the region and as such has a broad selection of shops. Its two main shopping centres are Port Central Shopping Centre and Settlement City Centre.
