Things to do in Tea Gardens

Tea Gardens is a great base from which to explore the surrounding waterways. Take the ferry across Port Stephens to Nelson Bay and marvel at the beauty of the region. Boating and fishing are popular along the Myall River and swimming and surfing are perfect at Bennetts Beach where you are guaranteed a secluded spot all to yourself. The coastline north of Tea Gardens is also popular with 4WD enthusiasts and bushwalkers, with several trails offering magnificent walks through rainforest and paperbark forests. The Myall Lakes National Park is home to spectacular beaches and stunning coastal scenery. Miles of secluded beaches and estuarine river systems are perfect for swimming, surfing and fishing. Mungo Brush within Myall Lakes National Park has a rainforest walk and is an ideal spot for picnics and bushwalks. Otherwise, Marine Drive running along the banks of the Myall River is the focal point of Tea Gardens and is perfect for fishing, picnicking by or simply strolling along. There is also a swimming pool and access to the Singing Bridge which leads to Hawks Nest at the end of Marine Drive.

History of Tea Gardens

Prior to European settlement, the area around Tea Gardens was inhabited by the Worimi Indigenous tribe. The first European settlers were loggers who worked the forests on the banks of the Myall River. The fishing industry and the sand mining industry later established bases near Tea Gardens and provided employment for the town. Today, along with its twin town of Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens is a sleepy village known as a popular and relaxing holiday destination.

Situated on the Myall River, which connects the Myall Lakes with Port Stephens, and separates Tea Gardens from its twin town of Hawks Nest, The waterways surrounding Tea Gardens are the town's most famous landmarks. Port Stephens, which is larger than Sydney Harbour, is a magnificent body of water. Flanked by two volcanic remnants at the point where it meets the sea, the area around Port Stephens has long been associated with long, lazy summer holidays. Myall Lakes National Park is one of the most spectacular National Parks in Australia. Stretching from Hawks Nest to Seal Rocks, the park includes wild, unspoilt beaches and picturesque lake systems, rainforests and amazing sand dune formations.

Tea Gardens and its twin town of Hawks Nest contain general stores, newsagencies, banks and takeaway food outlets. Nearby Raymond Terrace offers shopping centres with supermarkets and chain stores and all of the services of a town that supports the surrounding area.

Daily bus services connect Tea Gardens with Newcastle and Sydney. Williamtown Airport is a short distance away which offers daily flights to Sydney and other capital cities. A ferry service travels across Port Stephens to Nelson Bay.

Tea Gardens is 215 kilometres and a two and a half hour drive from Sydney. Newcastle is 75 kilometres from Tea Gardens with the drive taking approximately one hour.
