Things to do in Tweed Heads
A perfect, laidback companion to the bustle of the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads has been charming tourists for years and remains a fantastic holiday destination with an array of activities for the visitor.
The beaches of the area offer great surfing and swimming. The Tweed River and its estuary are a popular fishing and boating spot and the surfing Mecca of the Gold Coast is just up the road.
A cruise along the Tweed River is a must as is a trip to the peak of the Razorback Lookout which offers a sweeping vista of Tweed Heads and the Gold Coast.
To the south of Tweed Heads, there are a number of quaint, seaside villages including Kingscliff, Cabarita and Hastings Point. The surrounding hinterland is also worth exploring with tropical rainforests and spectacular peaks.
History of Tweed Heads
The Tweed Valley was first settled in the 1840's by timber cutters who plied their trade in the lush forests of the area. Following the logging industry, farmers settled in the valley and grew tropical fruit and sugar cane. Tweed Heads also supported a large fishing fleet from an early stage. The name Tweed comes from the River Tweed which marks the border between Scotland and England.
Located just to the south of the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads primarily now relies on the tourism and hospitality industries.
Landmark in Tweed Heads
The Tweed River cuts through the centre of town and provides a focal point for the town. Tweed Heads is also the point at which New South Wales becomes Queensland with the border dividing Tweed Heads from Coolangatta.
Mount Warning looms over the Tweed Valley as it has done so for centuries. An imposing, volcanic remnant, the peak of Mount Warning is said to be the first place in Australia to see the sunrise each day.
Shopping in Tweed Heads
Centro Tweed Mall and Tweed City Shopping Centre are the two main shopping complexes in the town. The two malls offer everything the visitor requires including supermarkets, movie theatres, major chain shops and interesting local stores. There are a growing number of home wares shops in the Tweed Heads area and both Tweed Heads and Coolangatta host regular markets that are well worth a look.
Restaurants & Cafes in Tweed Heads
Tweed Heads has a wide selection of dining options. Local seafood is popular and a number of restaurants specialise in freshly caught fish and other seafood. There are takeaway shops, cafes and food courts as well.
Sports & Fitness in Tweed Heads
Sporting activities abound in the Tweed Valley. There are some great golf courses in the area including the Tweed Coolangatta Course. There are also a number of sporting fields, ovals and swimming pools. The area is famous for its surf breaks including Duranbah, Kirra Beach and Kingscliff Beach.
Transport in Tweed Heads
Tweed Heads is one hour north of Sydney by air and an easy one and a half hour drive south of Brisbane. Gold Coast Airport is a short distance away in Coolangatta and there are frequent, direct services to all major capital cities. Coaches from Sydney and Brisbane stop in Tweed Heads and local buses connect to the Gold Coast and surrounds.

Tweed Heads is 834 kilometres from Sydney and 105 kilometres from Brisbane. Tweed Heads is also only 26 kilometres from the heart of the Gold Coast at Surfers Paradise.
