Part of Wollombi's charm lies in its historic architecture which dates back to the 1800's. The old post office, church, primary school and cemetery were all constructed in the nineteenth century and can be seen from the Wollombi Village Historical Walk.
Wollombi is a great place to see remnants of the Great Northern Road which was constructed entirely with convict labour. Many bridges, walls and culverts of the road are easily accessible from Wollombi. Wollombi and the surrounding Hunter Valley also contains important Aboriginal rock art and engravings, many of which are preserved in the Yengo and Watagans National Parks.
Wollombi is also within easy reach of the many wineries and restaurants in the region and the gorgeous country villages of Laguna, Pokolbin and Broke are also a short distance away.
History of Wollombi
Wollombi was first inhabited by the Darkinjung Aboriginal people. In the local Aboriginal language the name Wollombi means the meeting of the waters. Many traces of the Darkinjung people remain today in the form of camp sites and rock art.
Following the establishment of Newcastle and Maitland, Wollombi became a busy service town on the Great Northern Road which, built by convict labour in the early 1800s, was the first road linking Sydney with the Hunter Valley.
