Things to do in Esperance
The Great Ocean Drive, a 38 kilometre loop of road heading west from Esperance is a must. Whether you drive, cycle or walk along the route, this unique view of the coast, taking in Observatory Point and the Pink Lake contains some remarkable scenery.
The Esperance Heritage Walk gives an insight into the historic buildings of the region and the Esperance Museum is also a popular attraction. Lake Monjingup is a calm and peaceful spot for picnics and walks.
The offshore islands are a popular spot with boaters and anglers. Cruises from Esperance harbour depart for Woody Island, which offers picnic spots, birdwatching opportunities and some terrific bushwalking.
The coastal National Parks including Cape Le Grand National Park and Stokes National Park all offer stunning coastal scenery with picture postcard beaches perfect for swimming, surfing and beachcombing.
History of Esperance
Esperance was first visited by Dutch and French explorers and it was from the French ship, L'Esperance, that the town of Esperance derives its name.
Matthew Flinders visited the region in 1802 and soon after the area began attracting whalers and farmers. Officially gazetted in 1893, Esperance's harbour and surrounding farm land ensured the town's growth and today the primary industries remain fishing and agriculture. With its natural beauty and wild, unspoilt coast, tourism is a rapidly growing industry.

The Esperance region of Western Australia boasts some of the nation's most beautiful and unspoilt coastlines. Home to countless beaches, bays and inlets, the coast from Albany to Esperance and beyond is the number one landmark of the region. The region is also home to some of the whitest sand beaches in Australia with Lucky Beach in the Cape Le Grand National Park officially declared the whitest beach in Australia.
The exceptional natural beauty of the region is most evident in the many National Parks surrounding Esperance and Albany. From the picture perfect coast of the Cape Le Grand National Park and Stokes National Park to the beautiful, ancient granite formations of the Peak Charles National Park.
Shopping in Esperance
Esperance has a Woolworths supermarket and a busy shopping precinct with all of the amenities of a town that services a large surrounding area. The Albany Plaza shopping centre has a Coles supermarket and 30 other speciality retail stores.
There are a number of arts and crafts galleries in the Esperance region including a glass art gallery, woodworking gallery and traditional visual art galleries.

The Esperance region is great for surfing. Esperance itself boasts excellent breaks at West Beach, Fourth Beach and Observatory Beach. Around Albany try Middleton Beach, Cosy Corner, Two Peoples Bay, Emu Beach, Shelley Beach and Mutton Bird Beaches. The region is also popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers.
The Esperance region is also a haven for bushwalkers. With six national parks in the area, there is a trail for every level of hiker. The most popular trails are the Coastal Track and Frenchmans Peak in Cape Le Grand National Park and the Heritage Trail in Stokes National Park.
Anglers will love Esperance where the best spots for dropping a line in are at Wharton Beach, Lucky Bay and Duke of Orleans Bay.
Esperance has an excellent golf course and there are two courses in Albany where there is also an aquatic and leisure centre.
Transport in Esperance
Skywest operates daily flights from Perth to Esperance Airport and flights from Perth to Albany Airport. Coach services operate from Perth and travel to Albany to Esperance. Esperance is an eight to nine hour drive from Perth depending on which route you take.
